Breguet is one of the oldest and most prestigious Swiss watch brands which possess a great historical and cultural heritage as well as avant-garde technology. Breguet has always had a fascinating ability to innovate. With some of its masterpieces having passed through the hands of George Washington, Napoleon Bonaparte, Sir Winston Churchill, and various other crowned heads of states in Asia and Europe, Breguet is definitely the dream of many watch aficionados and connoisseurs.
The spark was initiated by Abraham Louis Breguet who founded the company in 1775 and still continues to be an inspiration to many modern day watchmakers. Abraham Louis Breguet was a genius horologist, had he been born before the concept of time existed, A.L Breguet would have invented it. He remains an icon to this day.
Breguet is still remembered to this day in watchmaking schools due to the numerous horological terms prefixed by his name, just to mention a few Breguet numerals and the Breguet overcoil (this was a way of bending the balance spring over itself thus improving the regular concentric “breathing” of the spring). He is also credited with such groundbreaking innovations like the tourbillon, self-winding watch, the gong within the minute repeater and not forgetting the shock absorption system
Since its inception in the late 18th century, Breguet has consistently preserved and continues to abide by the essential values so much prized by its founder Abraham-Louis Breguet. Brequet is built on elegance, beauty, and a true and consistent European DNA with a dash of mastery horology plus understated designs.
Unlike other watch houses who dubiously try to fabricate a chain of historical events and even rediscover their own identities, Breguet naturally and flawlessly embodies the finest and evidence backed historical treasures. Breguet possesses the most illustrious corporate history that any haute horlogerie company wishes for.
It is not merely just a brand expressing watchmaking excellence, there is more to it. Breguet is rather part of a cultural and historical heritage oozing with memories and emotions. Until today, Breguet watches are masterpieces with a dash of uniqueness that cannot go unnoticed. The company blends art and technology, it is not merely a stylistic exercise. Ever since its enactment, Breguet has always woven and kept close ties with astronomy and science which is what positioned the brand at the heart of Europe`s intellectual development.
Breguet was found by Abraham-Louis Breguet in 1775. A. L Breguet was a native Swiss watchmaker born to Huguenot parents in the little picturesque town of Neuchâtel. Breguet was mentored by two great and historical horologists, Ferdinand Berthoud and Jean-Antoine Lépine for ten years before setting up his own watchmaking business in Paris at 51 Quai de l'Horloge on the Île de la Cité in Paris.
Breguet managed to secure his capital through the dowry that he got from marrying the daughter of a rich and prominent French bourgeois. With the capital and the connections, he had made as a student of mathematics and during his apprenticeship as a watchmaker A.L Breguet managed to establish his business and was well equipped for a successful path.
Mr. Breguet spent most of his life in France where most of his serial master inventions were produced. Some of his first inventions were the gong spring for repeater watches, the automatic watch, referred to as “a perpetual” and the first shock-absorber device, the “pare-chute”.
Breguet was an agent of change, change for the better. Breguet watches were always constantly upgraded and they contained original movements, with anchor or cylinder escapement. The French revolution put some strains on Breguet`s business forcing him to return to his native city. Nonetheless, he took along with him a bunch of inventions, like the first traveling clock which he sold to Napoleon, the “sympathique” clock and the Breguet balance spring, the tourbillon (indisputable demonstration of his genius) and the tactile watch.
The tourbillon was patented on 7 Messidor Year 9. According to the Republican calendar which was still functional those days. 7 Messidor Year 9 can be translated to 26 June 1801. The tourbillon was a solution to a longstanding problem of gravity, gravity exercises tend to have detrimental effects on the regularity of a movement by generating variations in rate. On the 26th of June 1801, Abraham-Louis Breguet was awarded the patent for the invention of the tourbillon by the French Minister of Interior.
A.L Breguet` s fame was on the rise and he even got the attention of some royal officials in Asia, America and Europe, the likes of Queen Marie-Antoinette and King Louis XVI were among his clients. Breguet became the principal watchmaker of the elite class and was highly admired in all the Royal courts of Europe. Adding to his list of the most prestigious clients, A.L Beguet manufactured special timepieces including the very first wrist watch manufactured in 1810 for the queen of Napples.
Abraham-Louis Breguet received countless innovative awards in his time. He received many honours like the highly esteemed Legion of Honour from King Louis XVIII among many others and eventually he became a member of the Office of Longitudes and Horology of the Royal French Navy. A. L Breguet died in 1823 and he was eulogised as revolutionist of horology.
